From Wall Street to Ministry: The Story of a Christian Union Ministry Fellow

Christian Union is pleased to announce the appointment of John Carey as a ministry fellow for Christian Union New York City. Carey will serve alongside fellow Christian Union Ministry Fellow Ben Kingston to share the Gospel and foster spiritual growth in New York City.

Before coming to Christian Union, John Carey spent 17 years working in finance and technology on Wall Street. He also worked at a small software startup and a large financial technology firm. Carey describes this season of his life as having “always had a longing to do something more meaningful with my life.”

Carey completed his undergraduate degree in economics and computer science at New York University. Afterward, he earned a Master of Business Administration from Yale University and a Master of Arts in biblical studies from Westminster Theological Seminary.

Carey grew up in a Catholic home. In high school, he says that he “became more serious about [his] faith” but also began “to feel as though there was something missing.”

The summer after his freshman year of college, he “got connected to a parachurch ministry and started studying the Bible.” As he says, “That’s where things really took off.”

Carey continued in ministry throughout college, taking on leadership roles in his campus ministry and discipling other students. After graduation, he pursued a career in finance while also volunteering in various capacities at his church and for organizations such as The Bowery Mission, which serves the homeless in New York City. He was involved in a young adult Bible study and assisted with an inner-city ministry for teenagers.

His involvement in these ministries, coupled with his theological training, confirmed that God was calling him to ministry. “After 17 years,” he says, “I just felt like God was calling me to move on from the business world into full-time ministry.”

Carey first connected with Christian Union when he learned about the ministry from friends in New York City. “I heard about Christian Union and their mission to develop leaders and felt like that was a good fit with my passions and my gifts.”

Carey plans to leverage his business background as he shares the Gospel in New York City. He feels that his experience will help him to better connect with people in their workplaces. “I feel like God has given me a lot of experiences,” he says, “especially with my business background, that will enable me to connect with people who are working in similar fields.”

Carey will use his gifts for teaching and discipleship to further Christian Union’s mission in New York City. Carey enjoys learning and helping others to learn. “I just love learning and helping people to connect with God and grow in their faith,” he says. “I want to help people in New York City to experience the love of God and to grow in their faith and to be a witness for Christ in the workplace.”

Carey is married to Laura and they have two children, Caleb and Olivia. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, exercising, reading, and watching sports. He and his family are members of Apostles Church in New York City.
