Four Respected Leaders Explain The View
By Anne Kerhoulas
What is complementarianism and why is it important? This question is at the heart of this 2021 Gospel Coalition Conference discussion between Nancy Guthrie, Ligon Duncan, Melissa Kruger, and Kevin DeYoung.
Complementarianism is defined by The Gospel Coalition in this way: “In God’s wise purposes, men and women are not interchangeable, but rather they complement each other in mutually enriching ways.”
Kevin DeYoung, who recently released a book on the topic, reflects in the discussion that God made all of creation with differentiated parts—the sun and the moon, the earth and the heavens, the sky and the land, the man and the woman. Part of the storyline of the Bible is understanding how God made these complementary pairs each for the other and that redemptive history is moving toward these pairs coming together—man and woman becoming one flesh, Jesus being united to his Church, heaven coming down to earth.
This panel discussion gives voice to the primary scriptures involved with the complementarian view, the common objections, and what healthy complementarianism is meant to look like in practice.
Christian Union maintains a complementarian view, teaching and preaching the good news that God made men and women with intention to bring glory to himself. Through thought-provoking forums and salons and a tailored Bible course entitled Sex and Spirituality, Christian Union disciples students and professionals to uphold the traditional and beautiful view of God’s design for men and women.
