Perspectives on Homelessness

Perspectives on Homelessness

Christian Union New York Virtual Salon

br />On August 26, 2020 Christian Union New York hosted a virtual salon on Perspectives on Homelessness with Ed Morgan.

The dialogue around homelessness today is mostly political and uninformative. Christian Union New York’s Salon featured two faithful experts, Ed Morgan, president emeritus of New York’s iconic Bowery Mission and John Ashmen, president and CEO of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions. Morgan argued that “the real cause of homelessness is a profound lack of community.”

He encouraged the Salon attendees to focus on looking for a more complex understanding than what one sees on the street, or in those asking for money around subway stations. He urged compassion, but also asked attendees to embrace transformational solutions, which are focused on a broader healing and not simply providing a roof over someone’s head. Ashmen added his frontline perspective from North America’s oldest and largest network of independent ministries serving the hungry, homeless, abused, and addicted.
