Dr. Shenvi Discusses His Book on Apologetics

By Anne Kerhoulas

But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect. - 1 Peter 3:14-15.

This episode of the Relatable podcast with Ali Beth Stuckey features chemist, author, and Christian apologist Dr. Neil Shenvi. Discussing his book Why Believe: A Reasoned Approach to Christianity, Shenvi and Stuckey dive into classic apologetic questions and discuss why Shenvi felt compelled to write the book he did.

Shenvi became a Christian while doing graduate work at UC Berkeley but first began his journey to faith while a student at Princeton. While at Princeton, he picked up a free copy of The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis at a Campus Crusade for Christ table. Ironically enough, the Campus Crusade for Christ ministry at Princeton was being led by Christian Union founder and CEO Matt Bennett at the time. Shenvi took a copy, read it, and began a long journey to confessing Jesus as Lord and Savior.

While working on his Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry at UC Berkeley, he gave his life to Christ and became deeply interested in how to present the gospel and share the story of Jesus in a highly intellectual setting. His book aims to do just that.

Christain Union’s mission and vision fall in step with the life and conversion of Dr. Shenvi. From small acts of faithfulness like handing out books every fall and spring on campus, to engaging campus with intellectual presentations of the gospel, Christian Union strives to meet individuals like Dr. Shenvi during a formative season of life with the hope that they—like Dr. Shenvi—will be forever transformed by the love of Jesus.
