Harvard Student Damaris Taylor uses Talent Show to Shine the Spotlight on Christ

Damaris_Taylor2A founding member and active participant in Christian Union’s leadership development ministry at Harvard, Damaris Taylor ’12 has learned to leverage his gifts and leadership skills for Christ, including his tremendous gift of singing.

In fact, Damaris takes advantage of every opportunity to influence others for Christ. For two years, he has performed songs that express his faith in Jesus Christ during Harvard’s Night at the Apollo Talent Show. Taylor’s heartfelt worship stood in marked contrast to step teams, bands, and an oratory entitled “Love and Lust.”

In 2010, while some contestants were mercilessly booed off the stage, Taylor’s rendition of “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” drew a standing ovation and he even led the audience in a sing-along of the chorus, “Oh for grace to trust Him more.

The bold witness was a repeat performance of a worshipful approach to his 2009 performance, an a cappella duet of “O The Blood of Jesus.”

Damaris credits Christian Union’s ministry’s Bible courses, leadership coaching, and discipleship with strengthening his faith and giving him the courage to belt out Christian songs to a non-church crowd.

“Though I enjoy performing, this wasn’t a performance,” he said. “It was an act of evangelism and an act of servant leadership.  As I put my hope in Him, I truly believe my actions will encourage others to give a strong and clear voice to their faith as well.”
