My role, as Ministry Director here at Dartmouth, is to answer this question from Psalm 113 with my students. In a sense, I am called to inspire them to “take God out of the box.” God is not our hobby, our pastime, or something that just makes our lives 10% better—for that they can watch sports or play the cello. No, God is far, far more.
It’s this gulf—the difference between our lowly state and God’s infinity that makes the gospel so amazing! And it’s when a student grasps this fact that they have the chance, right here and now, to encounter the God of the Universe on a personal, intimate level, that change really occurs. That’s when I can stop pushing and simply begin to guide as they gain momentum, pursuing God with all they have.
Paul teaches in 1 Timothy 4:8 that “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things.” To the category of “some value” I would also add intellectual, social, career, and really every other type of training. It’s all good, but it’s not best. The best is Christ himself.
So pray that the gospel continues to go forth here on campus! Pray that we might effectively reveal the infinite goodness of God to our students! Pray for grace, resources, and energy to finish the winter well. CU Vox continues to grow in strength, with new faces joining every week. Vine, our Leadership Lecture Series, is always packed. Our students are thriving, and interest in the things of God is burgeoning. 14 students just returned from CU’s Gospel of the Kingdom conference in New York City, where lives were changed and restored.
God is moving. May we have the grace to move alongside Him.
