As most of us continue our stay-at-home daily rhythms, our students are wrapping up this very unusual Spring quarter with their final projects, papers, and examinations. Certainly, while no one could have anticipated what this year would be like, I think back to my prayers in the fall as we stepped into this academic year. I had prayed that our students, as well as our ministry team, would hear from God in new and fresh ways. It’s fair to say that prayer has been answered! There have for sure been some heartbreaks along the way, but as I interact through video conferencing with our Stanford students, generally I find hopeful faces looking back at me. I remain encouraged by how they have faced this challenge, and continue to see God actively speaking into their lives.
Celebrated British author, G.K. Chesterton offers great insight:
You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.
Finding grace in the era of COVID-19 should be our daily exercise. Even as our hearts mourn over the staggering loss of life, God is good. He will continue to give good gifts to his children. We can adopt both postures: lament and gratitude.
Please join with the Stanford team as we pray:
- Pray for those who have lost internships and other opportunities this summer.
- Pray for our incoming freshman class as they step into this new chapter.
- Pray for the school administration to make wise and upright decisions about reopening the campus.
- Pray for Christian Union’s Cornerstone Partnership program as new avenues of support are explored.
- Pray for the CU Caritas ministry team and their families.
- And we commit to praying for you, our partners in ministry, and in the gospel!
We remain grateful for your prayers and your partnership.
In Christ,
Garret Brown
