A belated Welcome to 2017 — a year that promises to be eventful, no matter how you look at it. A verse that jumps to mind is Psalm 28: 7, The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him. Because He is my strength, and because I trust in Him — my response must be joy, and this is how I look at the year ahead.
Christian Union New York is beginning this year with a public event on February 7th. Our speaker series include small events (salons) around presentations and discussions on aspects of our faith, and larger public lectures (forums) by prominent leaders on what it looks like to lead as a person of faith in different spheres. On Feb. 7 we have Dr. William Hurlbut, professor of bioethics at Stanford Medical School speaking on “The Challenge and Opportunity of Gene Editing: Scientific and Ethical Considerations”. With the many advances in biotechnology there are growing ethical implications in how we apply these technologies to direct interventions in human life. Prof. Hurlbut is a leading bioethicist and the evening promises to be a time of insightful comments and discussion on how the church engages in this realm. In April we are hosting our annual Nexus: Professional conference in Stamford, CT. Plenary speakers and breakouts will engage us on what it means to “lead like Christ” in our thinking, in our work, and in our engagement in the public square. Join us April 7-9 for a weekend of speakers, connection with other professionals, late nights reminiscent of college days, and new insights into what it means to live fully in today’s world. Register now for a great deal, and an amazing weekend.
The apostle Paul talks about joy in Romans, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom 15:13). My prayer for you this month is that your life — in all its complexity, busyness and myriad relationships — will be filled with the hope that comes from our joy in Christ.
Warmly,
Scott Crosby
