We’ve been encouraged with a full month of events, small group meetings and an array of initiatives both large and small. All of these reflect the on-going work of God in New York - a city not widely viewed as a hotbed of spiritual vibrancy, yet vibrant nonetheless with the Spirit working in individual’s lives, in and through churches, and with an increasing hunger for spiritual perspective and truth.
At a recent Finance & Faith Forum five executives in the financial services world spoke about the challenges of working and leading as a Christian in this profession and how they envision a more fully restored profession that reflects God’s intent. Speaking to both university students and finance professionals it was a helpful look at what is possible in this space as we think about engaging the city in redemptive ways.
The benefit season has begun in New York -- non-profits of all stripes are beginning to host their annual benefit dinners/galas/events. The scope of Christian service in the city is growing in its presence and effectiveness in many areas, and the organizations that focus on these areas are finding more and more opportunities to serve and to allocate volunteers. The problems these organizations exist to meet, certainly highlight the brokenness of our world, but the increased volunteer manpower, creative solutions, and financial commitments - often from the faith community - is equally a testament to the resilience and strength of the church.
Finally, we see a growing pursuit of the disciplines of our faith - prayer and fasting and repentance. From November 1-10 CU New York is participating in The Great Experiment to seek the Lord, to pray with intention, and to commit to a faith goal for these ten days. While we’re encouraged we also know that much more needs to be done. There are those who need to hear the gospel, those who desperately need various kinds of help and assistance, and issues which can only be addressed under the cultural surface - the issues, systems and institutions that shape our norms and beliefs. To this end we continue to seek your prayers, involvement, and collaboration to engage New York at this level. Thank you for all you do to be a visible and tangible presence of the gospel in such a remarkable city.
