Cornell University

fullsizeoutput 2

Christian Union owns and operates the Mott Center at Cornell University. The Center was named after John R. Mott, a Cornell graduate (1888) who had an enormous impact for Jesus Christ, in America and abroad.

For 27 years, he served as the national secretary of the Intercollegiate YMCA of the USA and Canada. He was a part of the conference that launched the remarkable Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions, and later served as chairman of the executive committee of the Student Volunteer Movement. In 1895 he helped launch the World's Student Christian Federation. In his various roles, he helped organize student missionary movements in countries spanning the globe.

In 1946, he won the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of the impact of his work.

Mott's life was changed during his second year at Cornell (this quote is from the page on the Nobel Prize web site):

At this time he thought of his life's work as a choice between law and his father's lumber business, but he changed his mind upon hearing a lecture by J. Kynaston Studd on January 14, 1886. Three sentences in Studd's speech, he said, prompted his lifelong service of presenting Christ to students: "Seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God."

The house provides living space for Christian students who host Bible studies and other gatherings.

Christian Union Lumine Enjoys Close-to-Campus Space

On October 13, 2018, ministry faculty, staff, and financial partners celebrated the debut of the Columbia Ministry Center with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The celebration came after the purchase of the facility in February.

Properties near Columbia are challenging to secure as the university owns much of the surrounding neighborhood. Given the competitive nature of Manhattan’s real estate market, Christian Union leadership lionized the extraordinary acquisition, just a block from Columbia University’s massive Butler Library.

Since then, the ideally located space has functioned as a hub for Bible courses, discipleship, and meetings, providing a secure, cozy hangout for students.

The center is a visible sign that God is alive and working in the heart of NYC!

The map above illustrates the rarity of finding a property adjacent to Columbia that is not already owned by the University.

This new Ministry Center, located so unbelievably close to campus, will bless generations of students, faculty, and administrators. The precious word of God will go forth from the Center, powerfully transforming this great university and our nation.” -- Former Columbia Ministry Director Lane Young

columbia team 3Pictured to the left is the Christian Union ministry team at Columbia, joyfully holding up the keys to the newly aquired property.

The address is: 529 West 113th Street, just one block from Columbia University’s Butler Library.

The building is comprised of a basement and five floors, divided into three units. Christian Union will be using the first unit: the basement and the first floor.

The unit provides much needed room for Bible courses, prayer meetings, freshman outreach dinners, social events, and faculty preparation.

An Extraordinary Outpouring of Support

In October 2017, Christian Union urgently needed to raise a considerable sum to move forward with the purchase of a Christian Union Ministry Center at Columbia University. The Lord moved the hearts of 220 ministry partners to give a total of $503K for the Ministry Center, $11K more than was needed to move forward with the seller.

Heartfelt thanks go out to all who gave in response to the ministry’s urgent request for help. The generosity shown by so many is deeply encouraging and will make a difference for generations to come at Columbia.

All praise goes to our wonderful God, a gracious provider, for this outcome.

A Ministry Center is a game changer for sharing the Gospel at Columbia. The challenge of meeting and office space has been acute for Christian Union’s team already working with more than 200 students at Columbia. This is an enormous provision.

Additional Gifts Move the Ministry Forward

In the near term, the ministry will rent units 2 and 3 to offset the mortgage. Christian Union plans to use the whole building in the future; the project requires another $3 million of investments from God’s people. You can support this effort here

Naming Opportunities are Available

Christian Union offers naming rights to the building and key rooms in the center.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities Make a Difference

Gifts of appreciated securities can be made toward this campaign. Please contact the ministry by calling (609) 688-1700 Option 2 to alert us to the gift, so that it is counted toward the total today. Learn more here.

Christian Union Ministry at Columbia

Christian Union's ministry at Columbia is engaging nearly 200 students, an extraordinary number for this secular institution. Meeting space has been exceedingly difficult to come by at Columbia. Christian Union urgently needed room to minister to students and office its faculty.

Christian Union ministry fellows open their homes to students, but these are small spaces. It is not uncommon for the Columbia ministry director and his family to host an outreach in their very small apartment that is attended by more than 100 students over the course of the evening.

Additionally, a ministry center establishes a permanent Christian presence at Columbia. Crucially, in a time when Christian ministries can face discrimination on campus, ministry centers reduce Christian Union’s dependency on the universities’ administrations for securing space.

Help Christion Union Secure a Ministry Center at Dartmouth

Prayerfully consider giving toward securing a Ministry Center for Dartmouth. The Ministry Center will be used by campus Christian ministries for fellowship, meals, Bible studies, prayer, training, and administrative work.

The Need

Students at Dartmouth are in desperate need of Christian outreach and influence. These students, who will one day lead and shape culture, need to be developed and connected as transformative godly leaders. Christian Union intervenes in the lives of these young men and women to provide Christian leadership training to prepare them—by God’s grace—to lead for God’s glory. The ministry envisions a spiritually vibrant Columbia blessing the world for generations to come.

As Christian Union works to see this vision become reality, there is the urgent need to establish a ministry center adjacent to campus. A ministry centers establishes a permanent Christian presence and a visible welcoming space for the University’s students, staff, and faculty interested in learning about the Christian faith and experiencing a community of believers. It provides space for biblical teaching, leadership training and mentorship, and personal and intercessory prayer. Christian Union urgently needs room to minister to students and office its faculty.

Christian Union ministry fellows open their homes to students, but these too are constrained. It is not uncommon for the Dartmouth ministry director and his family to host an outreach in their very small apartment that is attended by more than 100 students over the course of the evening.

Crucially, in a time when Christian ministries can face discrimination on campus, ministry centers reduce Christian Union’s dependency on the universities’ administrations for securing space.

for Christian Leadership at Princeton

New Melrose Photo sm

Located at 19 Vandeventer Avenue, The Robert L. Melrose Center for Christian Leadership serves Christian Union's ongoing work to develop Christian leaders at Princeton.

The Melrose Center provides offices for Christian Union's ministry faculty and serves as a home base for alumni and student activities, including Bible courses, leadership training, mentoring appointments, prayer, and Reunions gatherings.

The building, just one block from campus, is a Princeton landmark, an 18th century center-hall Colonial originally built on Nassau Street in 1780 and moved to its current location in 1887.

The Center honors the memory of Robert Lumley Melrose, Princeton Class of 1954.

at Yale University

PenningtonCenter

The James W.C. Pennington Center has been significantly strengthening Christian witness and influence at Yale since 2014. Located at 31 Whitney Avenue, the property is one block from Timothy Dwight Hall and two blocks from Cross-campus.

The Pennington Center is a resource for Yale students, faculty and staff to learn about the Christian worldview. The center provides office and meeting space for fellowship, biblical teaching, leadership training, mentorship, and personal and intercessory prayer.

Unlock Yale’s Potential

Currently the ministry rents out the first floor to offset the mortgage costs on the facility.

With the full use of the Center, Christian Union will not need to use campus facilities for many ministry events and will not be hindered if the university should discriminate, as in 2012 when it stripped the BYX Christian fraternity of official recognition (Christian Union helped students to regain recognition).

"Draw near to God and he will draw near to you..." - James 4:8a

Christian Union Day and Night promotes spiritual strengthening in Christians across America. Through prayer, humility in fasting, repentance, evangelism and dedication to His ways as revealed in His word, Christians around our country are asking God to have mercy and bring about the greatest revival the nation has ever seen.

Past Events

Monday January 4 - Sunday January 24, 2021
We completed 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting for 2021 from January 4 - 24, 2021. Our theme for this fast was "Seek God for Peace and Purpose in 2021." Each participant fasted during the 21 days as led by the Lord. CU Day and Night emailed a daily written devotional giving motivation and guidance to seek God for personal peace and outward purpose. Every devotional was also published on https://www.dayandnight.org/, and shared on CU Day and Night’s social media channels.

Theme Verse
John 20:21, Jesus said to them again,“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

Prayer Emphasis
• Inward Peace – To bring change to our nation, we first need peace within ourselves. During these 21 days, we will seek “things above” (Colossians 3:1-3), diminish worldly distractions, and remove anything from our lives that grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:25-32). Fasting will humble us and lead us to repent with contrition and find God in wonderful new ways.

• Outward Purpose – Our nation needs God, and the Lord has sent us to witness for Him in America. We will pray fervently for our country and for our own courage to serve God’s redemptive plan. He has a specific role for each of us to play and we will inquire what He is saying to us personally for the year ahead.

Thanks for joining us and we pray you were blessed by this time of fasting!

Wednesday, March 18th - Sunday, April 26th, 2020
Christian Union Day and Night led a 40-day initiative of prayer, fasting and repentance to meet the threat of the Coronavirus. To read up to date communication regarding Christian Union's response to the Coronavirus, click here.

In times of crises, God desires that His people examine themselves and repent of everything displeasing to Him. We are to repent on behalf of ourselves and American Christianity which is largely self-indulgent and does not seek the Lord in holiness or wholehearted devotion. First-century Christians prayed and read the Scriptures every morning and evening, and fasted twice a week. Meanwhile, American Christians spend little energy seeking God and the church is therefore largely powerless. Most Christians don’t give at least ten percent of their income even though we are the richest country in the history of the world, and we pollute ourselves through movies and our own engagement with sexual immorality.

We abstained from food in various forms, praying and repenting of sin, starting Wednesday, March 18th through Sunday, April 26th 2020.

Each morning of the fast, participants received a special emailed devotion to keep you motivated to pray and fast as we face the trial of COVID-19. Perhaps this is a time when God desires to bring national revival as the attention of millions is disrupted from normal daily activities.

Visit www.dayandnight.org for more information.

Monday, January 20 - Wednesday, January 29, 2020

Christians joined across America in a ten-day fast (fasting from food). Participants followed the example of men and women of Scripture who humbled themselves and sought the Lord through fasting. Our country needs the spiritual renewal that only God can bring. May He hear our cry and answer!

Starting on Monday, January 20, 2020, participants sought God through the biblical practice of fasting. Some chose to fast from all foods for the entire ten days—drinking only liquids—while some decided to fast one or two meals each day. For some, health limitations will require a different type of fast (see fasting resources).

Participants received a special devotional by email each morning of the fast offering encouragement as participants devoted themselves to the Lord in humility through fasting. Our theme for this fast was “Undefiled,” and the ten daily devotions drew from the example of Daniel, a man of God who refused to conform to the ungodly culture in which he lived.

May God draw near and bring spiritual renewal to us and to our nation as we seek Him through prayer and fasting!

November 1 - 10, 2019
We united as the Body of Christ to make a difference in the spiritual landscape of our nation through The Great Experiment.

Monday, August 12 - Sunday, September 1, 2019

Christians across America joined us in a 21-day fast (fasting from food). Participants followed the example of men and women of Scripture who humbled themselves and sought the Lord through fasting. Our country needs the spiritual renewal that only God can bring. May He hear our cry and answer!

2019 Trip to Fiji
What a joy it is to see whole villages truly living for the things of God, walking in His ways, and giving glory to Him for all His good gifts. I had the pleasure of touring a number of villages in Fiji Islands which have been experiencing revival, following a process of communal repentance. The blessings God is pouring out upon these spiritually reborn communities almost have to be seen to be believed, including remarkable healing of the land and nearby sea. I share some details about what is happening there in this short video (4 minutes,12 seconds):

For a fuller picture, see this documentary made 15 years ago (1 hour,14 minutes):

Revival is something we desperately need in America. It is evident that our best efforts as Christians are only slowing the massive secularization of our society, not turning it back. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we need God to transform our entire culture!

After returning, we concluded our Great Experiment - ten days of seeking the Lord in an extraordinary way, together with a few thousand Christians from around the country. Participants shared that they were spiritually refreshed through the morning and evening video devotionals we sent out. One woman wrote:

"For my faith challenge, I wrote down every trial I have been through, and then wrote down how the Lord provided and how His name was glorified during these times. I am sharing at least one story of the Lord's work and provision in my life through my times of weakness or what felt like failure with at least one person a day. I was also personally encouraged to realize each trial yielded fruit in my life and truly brought glory to the Lord in the events surrounding each trial.

After listening to Matt Bennett's explanation of the process proceeding revival in Fiji in the Great Experiment video, I immediately began a fast and my husband joined me. We spent hours in prayer and the following day we both felt led to write the biggest check we have ever written to our local church. Ironically, we are facing the hardest financial time we have ever experienced. With joyful hearts, we delivered the check that day and the joy was so intense, we couldn't stop smiling.”

At Day and Night, we're excited to continue offering nationwide fasts, and I sincerely hope you'll join us. If you're new to the spiritual discipline of fasting, I invite you to dive in to our collection of fasting resources.

All glory and honor to God!

"Over the last three centuries, revivals have had a great impact. Between 1730 and 1830 successive movements of the Holy Spirit brought a large proportion of the population into the churches. These awakenings are not ultimately the result of marketing or organization. They come, by God’s grace and in his time, in response to extraordinary prayer. Christian Union Day and Night is making a serious attempt to spark this kind of prayer and devotion. I welcome it, and I’m very encouraged by it."

The Christian Union Conference on Faith and Action

courageousDo you attend one of these schools: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania or Yale?

Students from these schools joined us for an amazing weekend of worship, prayer, speakers, small groups, fellowship, seminars and more from February 22-24, 2019.

What does it mean to be “Courageous in the ways of the Lord”? How does this look in your studies? Your friendships? Your future?

The Nexus conference looked at courage in all of these areas, focusing on vocation. Students learned how to lead in their networks as they serve others like Christ. Students connected with industry professionals and learned from their experience in specific fields of study.

Nexus20191

Plenary Sessions

Matt Bennett challenged the audience through addressing evangelism and revival with wisdom shared from the Scriptures. Dr. Jimmy Lin encouraged students to be bold as you operate as a Christian in your vocation. Eric Metaxas inspired you to speak up for truth seen in God’s word. Baroness Cox urged you to stand for others and justice as you interact in the world.

Click here to watch the plenary speakers from Nexus 2019.

Nexus2019 7

Breakouts

Students had the opportunity to expand their knowledge with the guidance of Christian leaders, who encouraged them to consider issues in light of God’s Word. Students discussed topics such as leadership, evangelism, revival, sexuality, and the supernatural with subject-matter experts and leading Christian thinkers.

Vocational Panels

Students were able to glean insights from experienced professionals in industries including: The Academy, Applied Sciences, Business Ventures, Law & Government, Non-Profit Engagement, and Communications & Media.

Nexus2019 3

Prayer

As we draw near to God, He promises to draw near to us. Prayer is the means by which we receive from God and are empowered to intercede on behalf of others. At Nexus, students participated in life-changing and powerful times of prayer, not only in plenary sessions, but also in the 24-hour prayer room. Students prayed with fellow students from across campuses.

Being courageous in the ways of the Lord does not mean working alone, but instead by building groups, networks, and bodies of believers gathering together for fellowship, breaking bread and prayer. As a network, Christians can amplify the power for cultural change.  At Nexus there were opportunities to meet and spend time with fellow believers from across nine campuses and go deep in prayer and relationships. Through small groups students forged new friendships that will last beyond the conference and (with God’s help) in years to come.

SpokenWord

God’s Word is living and active. Students were inspired by fellow students, who memorized and performed spoken word pieces taken directly from Scripture. A time of joy and celebration, SpokenWord is one of the unique highlights of the Nexus Conference. Click here to watch.

*Update*
The early conferences occurred every third year. This allowed students involved in a Christian Union ministry to have an opportunity to attend at some point in their college careers. From 2016 to 2019, Nexus was held annually, but after careful evaluation, input from a variety of leaders, and in light of ministry objectives, the role and frequency of Nexus is being re-imagined.

No decision has been made about the date of the next Nexus Conference, but it will not be held in 2020.

June 22 - June 23, 2018, New York City

The CU Cities Conference 2018 convened graduate students and diverse professionals, from recent graduates to seasoned pros, from across industries, to explore compelling ideas about faith and its relevance to every facet of our lives. Graduates of Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, University of Pennslyvania, Princeton and Yale explored their role in becoming Christian leaders. Click here to watch the videos and click here to listen to the audio from the conference.
Katie Lentz, CU New York young professional: “The most impactful thing about this conference was the coming together of a network of people striving towards the same goal. It was so encouraging to gather with Christians from this city and other cities with the same Christ-centered personal mission in the workplace.”
